Wright-Cromwell News
By: Jennie K. Hanson, Pine Journal
As I sit down to complete this week’s news it’s May 23. I have to report that my husband, Bob, is doing well after a quintuple bypass and may get to come home this week. We are blessed that he was able to have the surgery on Friday the 13th, which ended up lucky for us. One of the best heart surgeons in the area, Dr. Konda, was available on that day which seems like a miracle in itself. Maybe no one else wanted surgery on the 13th, who knows? Our son, Curtis, was home for a week to visit his dad and me. He was a big support for us during this time of medical emergency. He flew back to Hawaii on Sunday, May 22.
The Cromwell-Wright School Board has hired a new superintendent, Jennifer Backer from Kettle River. This will be another first for good ol’ Cromwell to have a female superintendent, but I’m sure she will do a great job. Former superintendent Herb Helinski has done so much for our kids and the school in general. It would be great if you folks would send Herb a note of thanks for his many years of service as principal from fall 1984 to spring 1987 and as superintendent to our district from fall 1987 through June 2011.
Rozzie Dahlman Obando sure was relieved to be finished with her library-media degree from St. Catherine’s in Minneapolis. She has worked so hard for this and now the job hunting begins, but as of this time, she just wants to relax and enjoy her daughters and husband Fabio for the summer.
Military update: Brothers Cole and Blaise Johnson are enlisted in the U.S. Marines. Cole is now at Camp Lejeune, N.C., for diesel mechanic schooling and Blaise is at boot camp in San Diego.
The Cromwell Volunteer Fire Department Blood Drive will take place on Wednesday, June 15, from 2:30-6 p.m. The bloodmobile will be parked at the Cromwell Fire Department in downtown Cromwell. Contact Ray Lally at 218-644-3739 to sign up. By donating blood you would be in a drawing to win one of eight pairs of premium seat tickets and access to the Metropolitan Club at Target Field, one of 20 $25 gift cards for select restaurants near Target Field, or one of 20 $50 Twins Pro Shop gift cards.
Strikepoint, one of the world’s top handbell ensembles, will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Bethany Lutheran Church (5660 Highway 210) in Cromwell. There is no admission charge, but a $10 donation is suggested and appreciated.
The Floodwood Color Guard will be in Wright at the Park Veteran’s Monument on Memorial Day at 8:30 a.m. Please come to honor our fallen soldiers and veterans.
The Wright Public Cemetery is looking for monetary donations to help with lawn care for 2011. Any donations can be mailed to Judy VonDeLinde, PO Box 302, McGregor, MN 55760. Make checks out to the Wright Public Cemetery and thanks for any support. If everyone could give a little, it really counts up.
The Cromwell Area Historical Club has been busy putting together the senior pictures on poster boards from 1926-1954 so they can be displayed at the All School Reunion. Do you have any memorabilia from the school years that they could borrow? Some items such as pins, a band hat from 1963, sports uniforms, cheerleading clothing and any other items they could display would be great. If any individual or class would like to make up their own poster boards of any year pertaining to school events, contact Judy Koivisto at 218-644-3752. They have collected yearbooks from 1926 - 2011, but are still in need of a few more. If you have the 1983, ’87, ’91, ’93, ’96, ’00, ’01 or ’02 and are no longer in need of them, please donate them to the historical club.
Please get your All-School Reunion Reservations sent in. The deadline was a misprint, but we need them by June 1 if possible. Send them to Linda Larson, PO Box 36, Cromwell, MN 55726. The cost is $20. Remember: All area folks are welcome to attend whether you attended our school or not. Just send your name, address, etc., and the class you were in or what you taught or did at the school. Come and greet all the folks attending our community gathering! I have also received many wonderful letters of your memories of high school. They will really be fun to read.
The First Annual Kaleb Anderson Memorial 5K Family Fun Run/Walk and Pancake Breakfast will take place on July 2, which is the morning of the All-School Reunion. Call Jen Anderson at 218-644-3806 to sign up.
The Cromwell-Wright School graduation will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 27. This is an hour earlier than in the past years. Congratulations to all the area high school and college graduates. Good luck on your future plans.
There will be a Pancake Breakfast at the Big Top in Wright on May 28 sponsored by the Wrong Days Committee. The funds are low and they need some start-up money for Wrong Days, so plan to attend from 7-11 a.m. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 6-11 years and free for children age 5 and under.
On this Memorial Day weekend, let’s all pay tribute to our loved ones who have passed away and especially to those who gave their lives in service to our country in peace or war.
That’s all the news from Lake Amazingtornadopower and Hello to Eloise Larson and Lorretta Ray Mitchell from Ingrid Samuelson. Have a great and safe week!
