Barnum tops McGregor, heads to Final Four

It didn’t look pretty early, but Barnum is moving on.

Trailing 3-1 Tuesday afternoon, the second-seeded Bombers were on their heels until an eight-run fourth inning sparked them to a 13-3 six-inning victory over third-seeded McGregor in the Section 5A quarterfinals in Barnum.

According to Barnum Coach Sarah Yrjanson, her players (12-4) made some sluggish mistakes in the opening innings, but broke things open and never looked back. They’ll next face Isle in the Final Four in St. Cloud Thursday.

“We had some mental errors early on, but then turned it around,” Yrjanson said. “We know Isle is going to be tough, so we better have our game hats on and be ready to play. The girls are excited. I’m very proud of them.”

Barnum – who beat PACT-Spectrum in the first round last week – was led Tuesday by Jessica Newman’s 4-for-4 day at the dish, featuring a pair of triples, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored. Lauren Hultgren was the winning hurler for the Bombers, striking out six.
