A Cloquet woman and her son escaped from their burning home early this morning after being alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm.

According to a news release from the Cloquet Area Fire District, the woman awoke to find smoke filling the home at 1820 Doddridge Ave. at about 3:20 a.m. She discovered the fire in a bedroom, and quickly woke her son, whose bedroom was adjacent to the fire.

They evacuated the home safely and called 911. When fire crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames visible from one side of the home; inside, one bedroom was fully involved. The fire was contained to that room, with some damage to the attic.

Fire damage was severe in the bedroom, with moderate smoke damage throughout the home. There is not yet a monetary estimate of the damage; the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
