The 12-year-old boy who died from injuries suffered after hitting a tree while skiing at Spirit Mountain on Friday afternoon has been identified as Trent Stellrecht.
The Grantsburg, Wis., youth was one of 12 children on a ski trip organized by the Living Hope Church near Grantsburg.
On Friday, February 18th, 2011 at 4:15PM Gold Cross Ambulance was dispatched to 8455 Grand Avenue (which is a Spirit Mountain pick up point) for an unconscious patient with trauma. Stellrecht was transported by ambulance to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m., according to the police report.
The Duluth Police Department investigating the incident talked with Spirit Mountain Ski Patrol Officers who found the victim lying on the ground in a tree line halfway down a ski run, with obvious trauma and not breathing. They called 911 and started aid for the victim. It’s the first death at Spirit Mountain since 2007, when a Richfield, Minn., man died from injuries suffered on the hill.
Preliminary investigation would indicate this was an accident. Anyone that witnessed this is asked to call the Duluth Police Department at (218) 730-5050. No further information is available.
