A Superior police officer is being held in the Carlton County Jail on misdemeanor domestic assault charges.

Daniel Hawkin II, 43, of Duluth, a sergeant in the Superior Police Department, was arrested by Duluth police about 11:45 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report that Hawkin was involved in a domestic dispute.

Hawkin has been with the Superior force for 19 years.

Superior police Chief Floyd Peters said that as a result of the allegations, Hawkin has been placed on paid administrative leave, which, he said, is required by law and departmental policy, pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigations.

Peters said that because Carlton County Sheriff's Office is the investigating agency, he couldn’t comment further.

Carlton County prosecutor James Ross is reviewing the case for formal charges, which could come today or Tuesday.
