Winter storm warning continues for Duluth, points north

UPDATE: A winter storm warning continues for most of the rest of Northeastern Minnesota until 6 a.m. Monday. In the Duluth area, light snow falling today is forecast to increase in intensity this evening.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Duluth and most of the rest of Northeastern Minnesota until 6 a.m. Monday. Five to 10 inches of snow are possible across the warning area.

Snow has tapered off in the Duluth area for now, but the National Weather Service said it expects the snow to pick up again by the evening.

Meanwhile, a band of steady snow is continuing north of Duluth. A weather spotter northwest of Two Harbors reported 6.3 inches of snow as 11 a.m., with 4 inches reported near Grand Rapids and 3 inches at Alborn this morning.

Travel conditions are forecast to deteriorate throughout the day today as snow falls and as winds gusting up to 25 mph create areas of blowing and drifting snow.

This may be only the prelude to a second, bigger storm forecast to move across the Midwest from Tuesday into Wednesday. More details on that below.

Here's a roundup of the latest winter storm information from the National Weather Service:

  • DULUTH, CLOQUET: A winter storm warning is in effect through 6 a.m. Monday for forecast snowfall of 5 to 7 inches. Light snow is forecast to increase in intensity this evening.

  • IRON RANGE, NORTH SHORE, GUNFLINT TRAIL, INTERNATIONAL FALLS, GRAND RAPIDS: A winter storm warning is in effect through 6 a.m. Monday for forecast snowfall of 5 to 8 inches, with amounts up to 10 inches possible over the higher terrain of the North Shore from Finland to Grand Portage.

  • SUPERIOR, BAYFIELD, ASHLAND, HURLEY: A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, with snowfall of 3 to 5 inches possible. Five to 7 inches of snow may fall across the higher terrain of Ashland and Iron counties.

  • HINCKLEY: A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, with snowfall of 3 to 5 inches possible.

    Midweek storm

    There remains some uncertainty about a major winter storm forecast to affect the Midwest from Tuesday into Wednesday, but there is a chance that some parts of Minnesota may see snowfall of 10 inches or greater.

    It's too early to say exactly where the heaviest snow will fall, though the area between Duluth and the Twin Cities - for now - appears to be most likely to receive the brunt of the storm.
