Seven passengers received minor injuries Tuesday morning when a bus ran off an icy Interstate 35 in Carlton County.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the coach bus was traveling southbound on I-35 at Milepost 223, between the Mahtowa and Barnum exits, shortly after 8 a.m. when it attempted to move into the left lane to pass another vehicle. The bus slid into the median.

The bus driver, Richard Hammond, 72, of Duluth, was not injured. Seven passengers on the bus, ranging in age from 19 to 83, were treated for minor injuries, the Patrol reported.

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. Snow was falling across much of the Northland at the time of the accident.
