  • Mesaballoy Inc., a Hibbing manufacturer of grinding balls and castings for the taconite industry, yesterday filed a bankruptcy petition with U.S. District Court in Duluth. The firm had employed 40 workers who were laid off in early November.

  • Lt. Gov. Rudy Perpich yesterday asked that welfare recipients on the relief rolls be put to work tearing down dilapidated, vacant buildings in Northeastern Minnesota. Perpich estimated that there are more than 400 dilapidated buildings on the Iron Range alone.

  • Advocates and opponents of the proposed expansion of Potlatch’s pulp mill will gather at a public hearing in Cloquet this week to discuss the project. Potlatch officials say the expansion will lower the amount of chlorine needed and will reduce odors.

  • The Legislative Commission on Planning and Fiscal Policy is expected to vote at noon today on the last major piece of the state’s $838 million financial package for Northwest Airlines. The deal is expected to pass by one or two votes.
