Coming this weekend: Rat Rods

Roger Rentola and Bryan Dagel don't worry about waxing their old-time trucks. Instead, they proudly display their rusty (and quirky) vintage vehicles, lovingly pieced together out of several different trucks, vans and automobile, plus a couple beer kegs. Throw in a cow horn and an antique Boy Scout canteen, and Rentola's truck looks like it came straight out of the Disney-Pixar movie "Cars." Read all about Rat Rods in this week's Pine Journal, on newsstands Sept. 2.

"It's hard to define a Rat Rod, because every builder has a different idea of what they want," Dagel said, when asked to define a Rat Rod versus a Hot Rod. "I see it as more of an expression of art, what you can come up with. Plus you don't have to polish and clean during a show -- just BS with everyone and have fun. It's pure fun, basically."

This weekend in from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in downtown Mahtowa, the two members of the Peckerhead Rat Rod Club are hoping there will be hundreds of like-minded auto artists, who have made their own mobile collages.
