Filings have come to a close for elected offices in the cities, townships and school districts of Carlton County that did not participate in the recent primary election. And while many races yielded no real surprises, there were a few that are likely to garner special interest heading into November’s general election.
Topping the list is the race for three available posts on the Carlton School Board. Eight candidates had thrown their hats in the ring by the time filing came to a close at the end of the day Tuesday, including Timothy Johnson, Julianne Emerson, Howie Gunderson, Jill Hatfield, Robert Walton, Ryan Schmidt, Randy Schmitz and Stephanie (Bahen) Gibson. Schmitz and Schmidt are both incumbents.
Moose Lake, Esko and Barnum school districts also have significant candidate fields for three open positions each. Filing for the Moose Lake board were Julie Peterson, Lesley Ramey, Kris Lyons, Peter Steen and George Klaskin. Esko board candidates include Scott Powers, Gerald Frederick, Roland Bockbrader, Lynn McCumber and Margaret Sunnarborg. Filing for Barnum School Board were Michael Line, Paul Coughlin, Michelle Corrigan, Tony Newman, Donnie Juntunen, Charlie Jordan and Eric Bigelow.
Two candidates will vie for the position of mayor of Carlton: incumbent Leola Rodd and challenger Sandy Vernon. Cromwell Mayor Richard Huhta will run against Sam Clark, and Moose Lake Mayor Ted Shaw and Wright Mayor Dennis Johnson will run unopposed. Scanlon Mayor James Putnam will be opposed by former mayor Marshall Johnson. Incumbent city of Thomson Mayor Lawrence St. Germain will be challenged by Dustin Lerol.
