Canoeist drowns on Lake Winnibigoshish

A Cass Lake man drowned in a canoeing accident Saturday on Lake Winnibigoshish.

A Cass Lake man drowned in a canoeing accident Saturday on Lake Winnibigoshish.

The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Todd Raymond Roy, 45. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Roy and a second man were in a canoe that capsized about 100 yards from shore at Pigeon River. Neither man was wearing a life jacket, but the second man was able to swim to shore.

The accident was reported at 1:10 p.m. Searchers found Roy’s body two hours later. He was taken to Grand Itasca Medical Center by Deer River Ambulance and pronounced dead by the Itasca County coroner.
