Dora Lavina Huhta, 98, of Cromwell, Minn., died Friday, July 2, 2010, in Cardinal Courts in Cromwell. She was born Aug. 29, 1911, in Crosby, Minn., to Louis and Mathilda Johnson. She lived through the 1918 fire by staying in a root cellar with her brother. Dora attended school in Lawler, Minn., and graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School in 1929. After Normal training she taught school in Crow Wing County for several years. Dora married Jack A. Huhta on March 19, 1933, in Tamarack, Minn. They lived in Brookston, Palisade and Cromwell where her husband managed the Co-op stores and later managed the REA in Kettle River, Minn. In 1972 they built a home on Sand Lake in Moose Lake, Minn., which they both enjoyed. She lived there after Jack's death until 2001 when she moved to the Southview Apartments in Cromwell.
Dora was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell where she was active in the Ladies Aid in her younger years. She formerly belonged to the Eastern Star in Moose Lake. She enjoyed doing needlepoint, embroidery, playing Scrabble, gardening and picking berries. She was an excellent homemaker and made delicious meals and was a fantastic baker. Dora enjoyed walking three to five miles a day until she was in her late 80s. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was the most important and came first above all else.
Dora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; grandson, Kevin Hamre; daughter-in-law, Karen Huhta; and 12 siblings.
She is survived by two daughters, Marlene (Henry) Ruotsalainen of Hoyt Lakes, Minn., and Karen (George) Marinoni of Miami, Fla.; three sons, Jack of Gilbert, Minn., and Dick (Elaine) and Jim (Janie), both of Cromwell; 10 grandchildren, Henry (Lynn) Ruotsalainen of Hoyt Lakes, Diane (Mike) Fondie of Hazen, N.D., Steven (Lisa) Ruotsalainen of Kodiak, Alaska, Mark (Debbie) Ruotsalainen of Big Lake, Minn., Alan Huhta of Forest Lake, Minn., Joni (Alex) d'Audiffret of West Virginia, Dale Huhta of Virginia, Minn., Jani (Christian) Bonzi of Miami, Fla., Jim (Angie) Huhta of New Prague, Minn., and Jennifer (Nathan) LaFerrier of Elk Point, S.D.; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 6, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service in Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Barnum.
