The pedestrian who was killed when he was hit by a semitrailer in Cloquet early Thursday morning has been identified as Eugene Sam, 55, of Duluth.
Sam was struck by the semitrailer about 2:47 a.m. Thursday on Minnesota Highway 33 about a quarter-mile from the entrance to Wal-Mart, the Minnesota State Patrol said. The driver of the semitrailer was Shawn A. Anderson, 36, of Bertha, Minn.
Police said Sam was on the left lane of northbound Highway 33 when he was hit. It wasn’t clear whether he was walking across the highway or walking along it, but he was not in a crosswalk.
Police ruled out alcohol on Anderson’s part but are awaiting autopsy and blood-sample reports on Sam.
