The National Weather Service in Duluth has downgraded a winter storm warning to a winter weather advisory but has extended the event until 9 a.m. Tuesday for most of the region because of bitterly cold wind chills, blowing snow and slippery roads.

Some areas already have received more than a foot of new snow in the storm, which has hit the area since late Friday night with rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow. Most of the snow has fallen since Sunday morning, although many areas near Lake Superior saw mostly rain until early today.

The snow fell on top of a layer of water that is now freezing hard, leaving many sidewalks and streets extremely icy.

Another 1 to 3 inches of new snow is possible today before snow tapers off. Snow may continue into Tuesday along the South Shore snowbelt. Bitterly cold air is moving in for tonight and much of the week, with lows below zero and highs barely above zero.

Duluth area schools are open today but Duluth Transit Authority buses are running on plowed roads only.

Snowfall totals so far include:

14" Adolph (outside Proctor)

14" Patzau (Douglas County)

10" National Weather Service office, Hermantown

9" Finland

9" Lutsen

9" Bayfield

8" Embarrass

8" Orr

7" Maple

6" Cotton

5" Silver Bay
