Mary Pat Szyman (nee Hughes), 87, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at the Christian Community Home in Hudson, Wis.
Mary Pat Szyman (nee Hughes), 87, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at the Christian Community Home in Hudson, Wis. Mary Pat was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Hyde Park, Chicago., Ill. She graduated from St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary School and High School and received a B.S. in elementary education (1969) and an M.S. in special education (1971) from Chicago State University. She taught at Fernwood Elementary School and Worth Elementary School. After moving to Cloquet, Minn., in 1972, she was a supervisor at the Duluth Sheltered Workshop. In Cloquet, Mary Pat was a member of St. Casmir Parish and then Queen of Peace Parish. She and her husband, Bob, volunteered at the Cloquet Nursing Home before they moved to Westwood Apartments on the campus of the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.
She is the loving mother to Robert J. (Marie Towey), Charles R., James D., Thomas P. (Vanessa Kay), Marijo Bjorlin (Dean), Lawrence M. (Carol Erickson), Mark H., and Peter A. (Catherine Williams); loving grandmother to Robert M. (Tamala Hoftiezer), Stephan S., Daniel P., Elizabeth A., Rachael A., Jessica Huston, Samuel Huston, Christina M., Douglas S., Richard R., Kimberly A., Zachary A., Nathanael E., Joshua L., Sgt. Mark T., Cpl. Nicholas G., Travis A., Malia P., Patrick T., Liam J. and Megan C., David D., Stephen D. and Anna E. Bjorlin, Jessica B. Kasper (Isaac), and Mikel Herb (Brian); loving great-grandmother to Bella A., Cecelia M. and Malachy D. Herb; and loving aunt to Robert, Constance, Linda, Ellen, Timothy, James and James A. Hughes Jr., P.J, and Joan Krupa, and Matthew, Andrew and Wendell Burg.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert R.; brothers, Robert J. Hughes (Margaret Ford) and James A. Hughes (Patricia Barnes); sisters, Barbara Krupa and Lola Burg (Wendell); and her grandson, Patrick K.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, at Nelson Funeral Care, 1004 Cloquet Ave., Cloquet, and will resume Monday, Jan. 18, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 102 4th St., Cloquet.
