A monthlong crackdown on intoxicated drivers across Minnesota produced at least 2,577 arrests, including 38 by the Duluth Police Department.
The effort also resulted in citations for at least 4,586 seat belt violations, including 13 citations issued by the Duluth Police Department.
The numbers are based on preliminary December arrest reports from 337 of about 400 agencies participating in enhanced DWI enforcement efforts.
“It’s clear from the results of this DWI campaign too many people continue to make poor decisions about drinking and driving,” Capt. Matt Langer of the Minnesota State Patrol said in a news release. “These poor decisions result in death and injury, all of which are preventable if people choose to driver sober, which is why we’ll continue our efforts to deter and remove impaired drivers in 2010.”
In greater Minnesota, Duluth’s 38 DWI arrests were second to 40 arrests by Moorhead police. Rochester had 38, St. Cloud 31, Mankato 27, Owatonna 21 and the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office 20.
Enhanced DWI enforcement efforts will continue all year in the state’s
13 deadliest counties for impaired driving during 2006 through 2008. St. Louis is the only county in Northeastern Minnesota on the 13 deadliest list.
