Shirley Jean (Gilbert) Nyquist
Shirley Jean (Gilbert) Nyquist, 87, of Carlton, Minn., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009. Shirley was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Sturgeon Lake, Minn., to Roy and Fannie Gilbert.
Shirley Jean (Gilbert) Nyquist, 87, of Carlton, Minn., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009. Shirley was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Sturgeon Lake, Minn., to Roy and Fannie Gilbert. She grew up there and graduated from Willow River High School. She married Kenneth Nyquist in Carlton, where they made their home and raised their five children. Shirley worked at the Carlton Post Office for years and enjoyed her daily interactions with the town's residents. She was active in the Nicholson-Sellgren Post 2962 Auxiliary and J.M. Paine Presbyterian Church. She was dedicated to her children and grandchildren and instilled in them a strong sense of family values.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Kenneth and 10 brothers and sisters.
Shirley is survived by her children, Daryl (Cynthia) Nyquist, Diane (Don Brown) Nyquist, Clarice (Daniel) Westcott, Laurel (Toma) Anderson and Barry Nyquist; goddaughter, Vicki (Dean) Kerttula; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special family friend Alan Axtell.
Visitation was held Saturday, Nov. 28, from 9:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at J.M. Paine Memorial Presbyterian Church in Carlton. Interment service was held at Hillside Cemetery. A time of fellowship and luncheon followed in the church social hall.
