Girls State: Cloquet vs. Blake soccer today at the Metrodome

Girls: Cloquet vs. Blake

When: 10 a.m. today

Where: Metrodome, Minneapolis

Records: Cloquet 19-3-1; Blake 16-3-1

Outlook: The Lumberjacks won their first tournament game since 2002 with a 2-1 penalty-kick shootout victory over East Ridge in the quarterfinals Thursday in Roseville, Minn. Haley Bassett’s goal with less than 40 seconds remaining in regulation sent the game to overtime, and five players converted in the shootout. Goalkeeper Kaitrin Rathe stopped two shots in the shootout, won 5-4 by Cloquet. Bassett’s goal was the senior midfielder’s 15th of the season, one more than senior forward Courtney Esse and junior midfielder Jessie Ryan for the team lead. Rathe has allowed only two of her 19 goals during the playoffs. The Lumberjacks never have won a game at the Metrodome — a tie in the 2002 third-place game is their best effort. … The Bears have had better luck indoors, winning the Class A title in 2000 and finishing runners-up in 1999 and 2007 among their four previous state tournaments. Blake blanked Mankato West 3-0 in the quarterfinals as Natalie Sill, Hilary Crowe and Lydia Sutton scored goals. Sutton, an eighth-grade midfielder, leads the team in goals (15) and points (22). Junior Addie Adams, who allowed just nine goals in the regular season, hasn’t been beaten in the playoffs.
