A motorist driving a 1996 Ford Thunderbird was hospitalized Monday afternoon after his car collided with a semi trailer on Highway 33 in Cloquet.
The driver of the Thunderbird, Douglas Jay Diver, 38, was attempting to make a left turn at the intersection of Highway 33 and Cloquet Avenue when he collided with a semi trailer heading south, according to Scott Holman, Cloquet Police. The semi driver hit the brakes before the collision, causing skid marks, but the truck struck the Thunderbird hard enough to spin it around and knock it into another vehicle sitting at the stop light. The truck struck the car on the passenger side.
Diver, of Cloquet, was severely injured and pinned inside the vehicle, but emergency workers were able to remove him and take him to the hospital, Holman said. No one else was in the vehicle and the driver of the semi was not injured. The car was totaled.
