MINNEAPOLIS — About 1,000 people in Minnesota are reaching the end of their unemployment benefits each week.
Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development commissioner Dan McElroy says the number will spike around Christmas when the last federal benefit extension expires.
A bill currently moving through Congress would provide an additional 13 weeks of help to workers in states that have had unemployment rates of 8.5 percent or more for three straight months.
Minnesota wouldn’t qualify because the state’s jobless rate was 8 percent for August.
Minnesota members of Congress are trying to amend the bill to provide the extension to all states.
