Barnum’s youth leads them to runner-up finish in Section 5A

BARNUM, Minn. – When piecing together his lineup card early this spring, Barnum softball head coach Randy Myhre understood his team was quite young, but he also understood that his girls could do one thing very well – win.
Right from season’s start the Bombers were red hot, as they rattled off wins in their first 11 contests en route to finishing with an impressive 17-3 overall record and a Section 5A runner-up finish only behind eventual Class A runner-up Maple Lake.
Even though they came up just short of making the state tournament, Myhre was pleased with the young girls’ efforts to say the least.
“I thought we could have played a little better,” said Myhre. “But to get to where we got this year at this level of play is quite the feat and I’m so proud of these girls.”
Barnum loses four seniors in first baseman Alyssa Shanda and outfielders Brianna Mattson, Danielle Warneke and Jana Lambert next season, but with having one of the youngest teams around the diamond next year, there’s one thing Myhre knows his girls will do better than ever – win.
“We’re in a tough section, but to get to the section final, now that’s a good accomplishment,” said Myhre. “We had a great year and are only hoping to get better for next season.”
