Proctor Speedway fights weather and power outage

PROCTOR — A widespread power outage, coupled with sporadic rain showers cut short racing at the Proctor Speedway Sunday night. A reported damaged transformer in West Duluth cut power to that area as well as the city of Proctor, including the Proctor Speedway.
Officials forged ahead, running all the heat races despite no power to the public address system. The power came on in time for the first two feature events but a shower with a couple of laps remaining in the WISSOTA Late Model feature sent cars sliding off turn one.
After a brief delay, officials called the event complete. The final three features will be run over the ensuing weeks.
The Midwest modifieds completed their 20-lap event lined up with Glen Dammer on the pole flanked by Tommy Turcotte, who was the class of the field as he got the early jump and was quickly joined by Deven Van House. They immediately pulled away from the rest as Jimmy Latvala, Lance Solem and Travis Swanson squabbled over third.
Further back, another huge pack battled for sixth, a pack that included Skeeter Estey, Steve Stuart, Dammer, Adam Archer, Andrew Inman and Bill Matzdorf.
Joel Olejnicak’s spin in the fourth turn bunched the field and, at the green flag, Van House got the jump and took the lead as Turcotte had Swanson to contend with. Latvala ran fourth and Estey and Solem battled for fifth.
Andrew Inman’s ride stalled on the bottom of turn two bringing out the caution flag. On the restart Swanson tried the high side but Van House got away and the two put some distance on the gaggle of cars battling for position. Swanson dived to the bottom and grabbed the lead from Van House and shot out to a huge lead which went away when Latvala spun in turn four after contact with Solem with three laps left.
Swanson went on to take his first career WISSOTA sanctioned feature win. Turcotte, Van House, Estey and Latvala rounded out the top five.
It was 25 laps for the WISSOTA Late Models as Terry Lillo shot into the lead from the pole followed by Jeff Provinzino and the battle for second between Cory Jorgenson, John Massingill and Kevin Carlson.
Lillo streaked away from Provinzino early on, but Provinzino began to narrow the gap and grabbed the lead. Meanwhile, seventh starting Don Copp broke from the pack and set off after Lillo as Carlson worked his way into fourth. At the half way point Provinzino led Copp, Lillo, Carlson and Massingill. Copp closed up on Provinzino and the race for the win was on. Copp pulled a slide job on Provinzino after a great run off the fourth turn.
At his point rain began to fall and several cars including the leaders slid off the first turn into a pile. No injuries or serious damage was apparent and the race was called after going back to the lap previous to the rain. Copp, Provinzino, Carlson, Lillo and Harry Hanson rounded out the top five.
