James "Junior" VanNett, 37, of Cloquet, Minn., passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 15, 1971, in Cass Lake, Minn., to Vicky (Urrutia) Yellow Earrings and James VanNett. Junior was a member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibway and a lifetime Cloquet area resident. Junior attended many Powwows and participated as a grass dancer. He was a 1990 graduate of Fond du Lac High School. He worked as a PCA for Circle of Life. He worked for Fond du Lac Reservation at Head Start as a cook and as an intervention/prevention specialist at Min No Aya Win Clinic.
Junior was preceded in death by his father, James Sr., and grandparents, Benito Urrutia and Josephine Johnson.
He is survived by his mother, Vicky of Duluth; son, Kyle VanNett-Fairbanks of Tamarack; daughter, Kayla VanNett of Cloquet; his fiancé, Donna Hakala; sisters, Renee and Maria VanNett of Duluth, and JoeAnn (Ernesto) Hernandez of Minneapolis; two nieces, Nevada Urrutia and Tiarah Hernandez; and numerous aunts, uncles and extended family.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 1, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Fond du Lac Head Start Gymnasium. Funeral services will continue at the Head Start Gymnasium on Tuesday, June 2, at 10 a.m. Interment services will follow at Oneota Cemetery in Duluth. A time of fellowship and luncheon will follow the committal services at 12:30 p.m. back at the Head Start Gym.
