CEC boys win first playoff match

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys tennis team breezed to a first-round Section 7AA playoff victory on Monday, defeating Duluth Central by a team score of 6-1.

The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys tennis team breezed to a first-round Section 7AA playoff victory on Monday, defeating Duluth Central by a team score of 6-1.

In singles, No. 1 player Colton Roy needed just one game over the minimum to defeat Trevor Esson by 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2, Dylan Burslie defeated Central’s Jacob Marsh in straight sets by 6-4, 6-1. Jordan Johnson won Cloquet’s third singles match 6-4, 6-3 over David Zack, and Zach Zezulka finished a sweep of singles for CEC, needing only 13 games to defeat Hank Sluka 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, the All-Conference first team of Nathan Blascyk and Chase Pritchett, CEC, easily defeated Prescott Robinson and Caleb Reder 6-0, 6-1 and Jake Sorenson and Sean Kedrowski picked up a straight-set win over Curtis Johnson and Ethan Meyers 6-3, 7-5. The third doubles team of Jon Hammitt and Niko Michaelson lost a three-set thriller in trying to give CEC the sweep, but lost a third-set tie-breaker by 7-3 after rallying from a set down to force a third and deciding set.

CEC lost in Tuesday’s second-round to Duluth East 7-0, ending the season for the 'Jacks.
