A fatal car accident led to a power outage in the Wrenshall area Thursday morning, according to the Carlton County Sheriff's Office.

A 64-year-old Wrenshall man was driving eastbound on Alcohol Road when he apparently collapsed and the vehicle continued through an intersection, striking the power pole near Wrenshall School.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending the notification of relatives.

With no power at the school, officials gathered students and used cellular phones to contact parents, according to Trish Swanson who works in the school office. Students were sent home for the day.

Minnesota Power was still working on restoring power to parts of Wrenshall at 2 p.m. Thursday, but the school had power back by then, Swanson said.
