With a 43-0 win over Silver Bay in the Section 5 Nine-Man quarterfinals on Tuesday night, the Cromwell Cards set up a showdown with the only team to beat them during the regular season. The Cards advance to play Northland-Remer in Cromwell at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Adam Smith and Shale Korpela scored on runs of 15 and 4 yards in the first quarter. Jordan Suhonen ran for one conversion and Jordan Smith threw to Noah Wester for the other as the Cards took a 16-0 first quarter lead over the Mariners.
In the second quarter Suhonen, Adam Smith and Korpela all scored. Adam Smith tacked on a two-point conversion run as the Cards went into halftime ahead 36-0.
The only score of the second half was a 68-yard run by Smith. Jordan Smith finished the scoring with a conversion run to make it 43-0.
Defensively, it was the Tyler Burggraff show as he finished with five sacks against the Mariners.
“This is the best Section 5 has ever been since I’ve been here,” Gronner said. “There are eight quality teams making the playoffs and one solid team that will not.”
• If ever there was a total team effort in a football win, the Cromwell Cards exemplified it last Wednesday night in their 42-0 win against Nevis in their last regular season game.
“We held them to 31 yards of total offense,” recalled Cards coach Jeff Gronner.
Suhonen got Cromwell on the scoreboard with a 7-yard run on the Cards first drive. That was followed by a Suhonen-to-Jordan Smith 34-yard touchdown pass and an Adam Smith 9-yard touchdown run before the first quarter ended. At the end of a quarter, the Cards led 22-0.
In the second quarter, Adam Smith added a pair of runs, one from 47 yards out and the other from 4 yards away as they gained a 36-0 halftime lead.
The only score in the second half came when Suhonen scored on a 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter making it 42-0.
Korpela and John Schliauter had 11 and 10 tackles, respectively, while the pair also combined for 4-1/2 sacks.
Offensively, Suhonen finished with an 8-of-9 passing performance good for 172 yards and Jordan Smith caught four of those passes for 79 yards. Adam Smith scored three touchdowns and had 143 yards rushing.
