Spring Fever Days are just about here, and this year the community is planning a celebration unlike any other. That’s because this year the traditional “first festival of spring” will toast the 150th birthday of the state of Minnesota. And while Spring Fever Days has only been around for 26 of those 150 years, the folks of Barnum are ready to celebrate.
The Spring Fever Days event kicks off on Thursday, June 12, with the glamorous “Miss Barnum Pageant” beginning at 7 p.m. in the Barnum High School Auditorium. Following the theme of “Happy Birthday Minnesota,” the pageant will feature a host of candidates vying for this year’s title of “Miss Barnum.”
Also that night will be the popular Annual Cribbage Tournament at the Barnum Community Center, with past and future champs going head to head over the cribbage board. Competition gets under way at 6 p.m.
Collectors will want to get an early start on Friday, June 13, in order to be first in line for the Collectibles Sales at the Barnum Senior Center, slated to run from 8 a.m. to noon. The Ninth Annual Katie Poirier Memorial 10K Run/5K Walk is slated for later that day, with registration tables opening at 4:30 p.m. and buses departing for the starting line at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Steve Jurek at 218-389-3344.
Friday night will be an evening of family fun, with the 10th Annual Spring Fever Steak Fry set to sizzle from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the Barnum Community Center. The Second Annual Family Fun Game Night will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Barnum City Park, sponsored by the Barnum Youth Center.
A full day’s entertainment is in the works for Saturday, June 14, beginning with the Barnum United Methodist Pancake Breakfast from 6:30-10 a.m. at United Methodist Church. Early risers will also want to try their hand at the King Creek Taxidermy Fishing Contest at Bear Lake from 7-9 a.m. Call 218-389-6880 for more information.
The Nifty Fifties Cruiser Car Show will feature classic cars of all ages from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carlton County Fairgrounds, rain or shine. Also on tap for Saturday is the 29 Pines 18-hole Golf Tournament, with registration at 1:30 p.m. and tee-off at 2 p.m. Call 218-389-3136 for tournament details.
Girls varsity basketball players will take to the courts at Barnum elementary and high schools for tournament play from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Crafts and concessions will be on hand at the Barnum City Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Barnum Senior Center will host a Sloppy Joe lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and bingo beginning at 1 p.m.
The big Spring Fever Parade is set for 11 a.m., and the public is invited to stop by Emmanuel Lutheran Church for pie, coffee and conversation following the parade. Take a swing through Barnum City Park beginning at 1 p.m. for kids games and the Duluth Zoomobile, sponsored by Kids Plus.
Pick up the pace with the exciting oval track races at the Carlton County Fairgrounds beginning at 4 p.m., sponsored by Como Oil.
The Spring Fever Days celebration will wrap up on Sunday, June 15, with an 18-hole golf tournament at 29 Pines Country Club in Mahtowa. Registration gets under way at 8 a.m., with tee-off at 9 a.m. Call 218-389-3136 for more information.
Topping off the weekend will be the Spring Fever Raffle Drawing at noon in the Barnum City Park. Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance from Barnum Community Club members.
