The Esko Educational Foundation held its annual Scholarship and Academic Award Night on Monday, May 12, in the high school theater.
Members of the Esko Class of 2008 were awarded some $54,000 in local and memorial scholarships.
Also, Esko High School counselor Nicki Peterson announced the students who received awards from college grants and academic scholarships totaling over $882,400. They include: Colin Lindemood – Scott Plaistad Memorial Scholarship Science/ Chemistry; Rachel Schultz, Wyatt Andersen, and Kaycee Knutson – Ruth Logsdon Memorial Scholarship; Alex Haapanen and Michael Barrett – Kristin Burkholder Memorial Scholarship; Jaimie Rosee and Reba Schultz – EEF Scholarship; Jacob Olson, Scott Lindquist, Trina Mankowski and Julia Ferreira – Jarvis Family Memorial Scholarship; Bryan Lindquist – LaMarche Creek Foundation Scholarship; Laura Mills – Sherry Peterson-Kalm Memorial Scholarship; Ross Lofgren and Dan Granmo – William Vinje Memorial Scholarship; Ryan Eskuri – Betty Bergstedt Memorial Scholarship; Thomas Towner – Olesen Scholarship; Sam Swenson – Diane Johnson Memorial Scholarship; April Juusola – Art Miles Cloquet Golden Kiwanis Scholarship; Jenna Coughlin and Scott Ellison – Esko Area Lions Club Scholarship; Jeremy Syrjanen and Tony Granda – Esko Education Association Scholarship; Kali Luing – Dental Associates of Esko Scholarship; Aaron Johnson – Charlotte Powers Memorial Scholarship; Lucas Hanson – Gladys Richardson Memorial; Megan Johnson and Lindsay Schiller – RAM Mutual Insurance Scholarship; Trina Green – Robert Towne Scholarship; Brianna Langley – Republic Bank-Esko Branch; and Rachel Hendrickson – Finnish-American Ladies of Kaleva $100, matched by $100 from EEF.
Scholarship winners processed through EEF but selected by others include: Kaycee Knutson and Jordan Tollerud – Bob Thompson Memorial Scholarship; Megan Johnson – Lori Hilinski Memorial Scholarship; and Reba Schultz, Emily Savage, Laura Mills and Stephanie Knuckey – Esko Music Boosters Scholarships.
The EEF selects scholarship recipients using a computerized point system. The board takes into consideration: class rank, difficulty of courses taken and recommendations, along with community and extra curricular activities. Also, for several scholarships financial need is the major criteria. Students’ names are withheld from board members until selections are completed.
“As the cost of higher education continues to escalate, the EEF is committed to helping Esko graduates defray college expenses,” commented one EEF board member.
A major fund raiser held every August is the Kristin Burkholder Memorial Run.
Also, perpetual scholarships can be established in memory of a loved one. Anyone interested can contact an EEF board member for further information.
Serving on the current 13- member board are: Jim Schwartz, president; Karl Olesen, vice president; Peter Radosevich, treasurer; Janet Borash, secretary; Mary Marquis, coordinator; Dr. Jack Bergstedt, Lynn Davidson, Lorie Engen, Davis Helberg, Kari Knutson, H. Phillip Powers, Shawn Reed and Brent Smith.
The EEF board conveyed its deep appreciation to all who contribute their time, talent, and dollars to fund these scholarships.
