Fond du Lac Band offers reward in deer threat incident

Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa tribal leaders have issued a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever left a dead deer with a threatening letter tucked in its mouth on Tribal Chairwoman Karen Diver’s lawn.

Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa tribal leaders have issued a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever left a dead deer with a threatening letter tucked in its mouth on Tribal Chairwoman Karen Diver’s lawn.

“This is behavior that’s uncalled for,” said Tribal Police Chief Wally Dupuis. He said the investigation is ongoing.

Diver found the deer on Sunday, and by Monday morning many band members had heard what had happened. The letter, written on plain notebook paper, appeared to be loosely related to housing issues on the reservation. Dupuis called it a “childish” act.

The band’s governing Reservation Business Committee discussed offering the reward during a regular meeting on Tuesday. Tribal leaders have offered similar rewards for information on past crimes, including the break-in and theft of some firearms from the band’s Natural Resources Division building.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fond du Lac Tribal Police at 218-878-8040.
