Naturalist to discuss novel at Cloquet library Saturday

"Exploring the Natural World" is the theme of a presentation for all ages at Cloquet Public Library on Saturday, April 14, at 10:30 a.m. Kristine Hiller, a naturalist with Jay Cooke State Park, will explain how observation and experimentation help us learn about the cycles and processes of the natural world. Her talk complements the juvenile novel The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate, the young reader's selection for the One Book, One Community reading project.

The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a 2010 Newbery Honor Book by Jacqueline Kelly. The protagonist is 11-year-old Calpurnia, who wants to become a scientist. The year is 1899 and her only encouragement comes from her cantankerous grandfather, an avid naturalist. The book has been widely praised for its realism and inspiration in encouraging readers to think independently and to understand the scientific method.
