Lace up for the Fourth
What will you be doing on the Fourth of July? Some will be tying up their shoes to run or walk Cloquet's Sawdust 5K, in fact, around 400 people are estimated to participate in this year's race.
The seventh annual Sawdust — its theme is "Kill the Hills" — will follow its usual course, which starts and finishes right in Pinehurst Park. After the gun goes off at 8 a.m., runners and walkers will work their way up and down the hills of west-side Cloquet with a few flat spots to recover in between.
As usual, Cloquet student athletes will be stationed along the course to cheer on runners — and help out — when things get hard.
To register for the Sawdust 5K online, go to www.tempotickets.com/sawdust5k2017 or sign up before the race at Pine Valley that morning. Cost is $25 in advance and $30 on race day. Runners get a tech shirt along with a race bag. Awards go to the top three males and females along with age-division winners.
Proceeds from the race go to the Cloquet High School athletics program, in particular to help kids who might not otherwise be able to afford high school sports.
Runners can also sign up for the one-mile race later that morning in downtown Cloquet. The one-mile race starts at 10:30 a.m. on 18th Street in front of Northwoods Credit Union (1702 Avenue B). The bulk of the race is run the parade route down Cloquet Avenue with the finish line in front of The Jack bar. The mile race is also be the kick-off to the parade.
