Wilderness captain Dietrich named playoff MVP
The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Minnesota Wilderness captain Mike Deitrich has been named the Sportop Most Valuable Player for the 2013 SIJHL playoffs.
In 10 postseason contests, the 20-year-old native of South Hampton, N.J. -- who also garnered SIJHL Pizza Hut Player of the Year laurels as the league's top performer during the course of the regular season -- led all skaters in playoff goals with eight, while also tying for top spot overall in points with 15. He also shared second spot in assists with seven.
His efforts helped the Wilderness win their third consecutive Bill Salonen Cup after they defeated the Fort Frances Lakers 3-2 in double overtime Monday evening to capture the playoff crown in six games.
Among Dietrich's postseason accomplishments was a pair of game-winning tallies along with an impressive five-goal performance in game four of the final in which he accounted all five markers in a 5-3 victory.
Dietrich and the rest of his Wilderness teammates will now represent the SIJHL at the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada Jr. A championship, April 30 to May 4 in North Bay, Ontario.
