A storm system is forecast to drop several inches of snow tonight into Saturday across much of the Northland, and there's a chance accumulations may reach a half-foot in the Twin Ports.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Duluth, Superior, Two Harbors, Cloquet, Hinckley, Aitkin, Brainerd and most of Northwestern Wisconsin starting tonight.

The Weather Service reports that the heaviest snowfall is expected in areas near Lake Superior, including Duluth and Superior. Snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is possible, with locally higher amounts.

It's the result of a low-pressure system forecast to move across southern Minnesota and central Wisconsin. There may be some rain and freezing rain mixed in with the snow; with temperatures near 32 degrees, any snow that falls should be heavy and wet.

After this storm, there will be another chance for rain and snow in the Northland starting late Sunday night and continuing Monday and Tuesday.

Duluth, Superior, Cloquet, Two Harbors, Washburn, Ashland, Hurley

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. Friday through 4 p.m. Saturday. Snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is possible, with some locally higher amounts.

Snow is expected to begin between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. today. It may mix with rain or freezing rain late tonight and early Saturday morning, though no ice accumulation is expected.

Winds will be out of the east at 10 to 20 mph, with some gusts to 25 mph possible near Lake Superior.

Hinckley, Aitkin, Hill City, Brainerd, Walker, Grantsburg, Spooner

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. Friday through noon Saturday. Snowfall of 2 to 4 inches is possible, with some locally higher amounts in northern Cass and Aitkin counties.

Snow is expected to begin between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. today. It may mix with rain or freezing rain late tonight and early Saturday morning, and a light glazing of ice is possible.

Winds will be out of the east at 10 to 15 mph. The heaviest snowfall is expected late Friday and early Saturday.

Hayward, Phillips

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. Friday through noon Saturday. Snowfall of 2 to 4 inches is possible, with some locally higher amounts possible.

Snow is expected to begin between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. today. It may mix with rain or freezing rain late tonight and early Saturday morning, and a light glazing of ice is possible.

Winds will be out of the east at 10 to 15 mph. The heaviest snowfall is expected late Friday and early Saturday.

Grand Rapids, Iron Range, Grand Marais

No winter weather advisories are in effect. Light snow is expected Friday night and Saturday, with several inches of accumulation possible.
