Raymond Joseph Garsow

Raymond Joseph Garsow of Cloquet, Minn., passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at his home after his battle with cancer. He was born in Duluth, the son of Joseph Garceau and Susan Garsow. Cloquet was his home for the majority of his life.

Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955 and was stationed in Italy during the course of his military service. Following the Army, he returned to Cloquet, married, raised his family and worked as a brakeman and conductor for 40 years at the D&NE Railroad. Raymond retired in 1993 and enjoyed 20 years of active retirement, spending winters in Arizona and Florida with his devoted wife, Barbara.

An avid outdoorsman, Ray loved to fish, snowmobile and camp throughout his home state of Minnesota. He was an accomplished cribbage player and welcomed teaching others the game and enjoyed friendly competition with anyone who was willing to play. Raymond loved nature and was particularly fond of hummingbirds.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Russell Garsow.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara of Cloquet; his four children, Thomas (Kathleen) of Cloquet, Debra (Paul) Mendelson of Fairfax, Va., Kathryn (Dale) Hartwig of Elk River, Minn., and Susan (Peter) Halloran of Milford, N.H.; his sister, Audrey Baker of Springfield, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 57 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet. Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 102 Fourth St. Cloquet. Following interment in New Calvary Cemetery, all are invited to join the family at Queen of Peace for a luncheon in celebration of Raymonds life.
