Our View....New Year's Wishes
With the New Year upon us, the Pine Journal asked a range of area leaders to send in one wish or hope for their city, organization or all of Carlton County in 2014.
Here’s what they said:
I sincerely wish the people of Carlton County and the entire state of Minnesota a happy and healthy 2014. I look forward to a stronger economy and healthier communities in which the people of our region are able to enjoy the good company of family and friends. My wish is that we are all able to build stronger bonds with one another — in our families, our state, and our community — so that we can work together to make this state a better place for all of us.
State Senator Tony Lourey
I hope the Cloquet Area Fire District continues to mature and remain responsive as an organization in order to not only meet the needs of our communities, but to exceed people’s expectations. Fire and life safety issues do not only affect individuals, they have community-wide impacts. Take the time in 2014 to ensure your own safety and that of your friends, family, and neighbors; whether it is ensuring everyone in your vehicle wears their seatbelt, changing the battery in a smoke alarm, or wearing a bike helmet, think about the small things that make a big difference in your health and safety every day.
Cloquet Area Fire District Chief Kevin Schroeder
The outpouring of support following the floods of 2012 was overwhelming as recovery continued through 2013. My hope is that genuine kindness and compassion continues in 2014. Think “we before me,” reach out a hand, and open your heart.
United Way of Carlton County Executive Director Dorine Houck
One wish that I have for 2014 is that we find Cloquet residents who would volunteer to serve on either the Library Board, Library Foundation or Friends of the Library. We have many opportunities for people to contribute their time and talent to fulfill our mission of contributing to a democratic and engaged community by providing a welcoming space, stimulating imagination, and supporting children’s literacy.
Cloquet Library Director Mary Lukkarila
My hope is that we recognize and appreciate the hard work of our staff and management as they serve and protect our citizens in countless ways no matter what the circumstances. I wish everyone a happy, safe and healthy 2014.
Carlton County Commissioner Marv Bodie
If I had one wish for the Cloquet School District, I would wish that our community, staff and students would continue to find a way to maximize their potential despite tricky financial times and the ever present space (and mechanical/efficiency) issues in our district buildings.
Cloquet School Board member Dan Danielson
I would wish the community leaders and community members continue to support the restorative justice philosophies and we continue to move toward a restorative justice county model.
Carlton County Commissioner Thomas Proulx
I hope that as a city we use our half-cent sales tax, local government aid and our local taxes wisely. Also study our parks, housing and police plans to the best interest of our citizens. I wish the citizens of Cloquet a happy and prosperous new year.
Cloquet Mayor Bruce Ahlgren
I wish for a new year of learning for all:
+ learning to care for our neighbors, our colleagues, our students;
+ learning to be patient, to accept the challenges and opportunities we encounter;
+ learning to be thankful for all that we have; and
+ learning to do and be our best in every situation.
Carlton Schools Superintendent Peter Haapala
I hope for peace, prosperity, and good health for everyone in the region throughout 2014.
Community Memorial Hospital CEO Rick Breuer
