The nine-point victory was the ninth consecutive win for the state's highest-scoring Ogichidaa (23-3) - averaging 91 points per night - while it landed their tiny tribal school in their first-ever championship game in any sport when top-seeded FDL faces South Ridge in Friday's 7 p.m. final at Duluth Denfeld High School. Playing in Wednesday's other semifinal, the Panthers (23-3) overcame a 34-25 halftime deficit and kept co-No. 1 seed Ely scoreless for the final 5:06 to top the Timberwolves 63-53, as second-seeded South Ridge rallied to their 16th straight win and extended their current unbeaten stretch to 54 days.
Friday will be an ultra-rare scene for Fond du Lac Ojibwe Coach Earl Otis, whose son, Spencer, is a senior reserve for South Ridge, making for an odd father-versus-son matchup. "It'll definitely be weird," Otis said over the phone Thursday morning.
