Memorial Day events set in Carlton County
Cloquet Minnesota 122 Avenue C 55720

This year marks the 150th anniversary of "Taps," according to Cloquet historian Joe Peterson - the familiar melody most often sounded at dusk to signal "day is done," or at funerals or special ceremonies as a final tribute to one who has served in the military.

"Taps" will no doubt figure prominently once again this Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, as local veterans groups lead community members in paying tribute to departed comrades for their military service to our country.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3979, American Legion Post 262, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 and American Ex-Prisoners of War, along with their auxiliaries, will join forces to pay visits to cemeteries in the Cloquet area.

The first stop will be at the Sawyer Cemetery on Highway 210 at 8:15 a.m., followed by a visit to St. Mary and Joseph Cemetery, also in Sawyer, at 8:30 a.m., before moving on to the cemetery at Holy Family Mission for a 9 a.m. ceremony.

The local vets will pay their respects at Maple Grove Cemetery in Cloquet at 9:15 a.m. and then travel to New Calvary Cemetery for a stop at 9:30 a.m. The group will pause on the hill between the old cemeteries on the hill above Pinehurst Park at 9:50 a.m. and then head out to present a tribute at the Apostolic Church Cemetery in Esko at 10:20 a.m.

A visit to St. Matthew's Cemetery on North Cloquet Road is set for 10:45 a.m., followed by a tribute at Pine River Cemetery on North Highway 33 at

11:05 a.m.

The group will culminate the morning's activities with a special gathering in Veterans Park in Cloquet, starting with patriotic music by the Cloquet Community Band at 11 a.m., followed by a flag raising ceremony at 11:30 a.m. The Memorial Day address will be delivered by Chaplain Dennis Morriem of Community Memorial Hospital.

The Nicholson-Sellgren Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2962 will begin its Memorial Day tributes with a stop at Eagle Lake Cemetery at 7:45 a.m., followed by a visit to the Cromwell Cemetery at 8:10 a.m. The group will move on to the Atkinson Cemetery at 8:45 a.m., the Elim Lutheran Cemetery at 9:25 a.m., Oak Lake at 9:45 a.m., Nickerson at 10:15 a.m., and St. John's in Wrenshall at 10:55 a.m. VFW members will present the final tribute of the morning at Carlton's Hillside Cemetery beginning at 11:15 a.m.

Tester Niemi Post 562 of Brookston will also conduct color guard services on Memorial Day, beginning with a stop at Arrowhead Cemetery at

9 a.m. From there, the group will move on to Perch Lake for a 9:25 a.m. ceremony, followed by stops at Industrial Cemetery at 10:05 a.m., Independence Cemetery at 10:25 a.m., Alborn Cemetery at10:40 a.m., Indian Hill Cemetery at11:05 a.m. and Culver Cemetery at 11:15 a.m.
