Local students participate in Honor Band
Students from Wrenshall, Barnum and Moose Lake high schools were among the region's top high school musicians to gather Oct. 17 at the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a day of advanced skill clinics and performances during the annual Tri-State Honor Band Festival.
Honor Band students spent the day working with noted guest musicians and university faculty, including Ed Kiefer, renowned composer and clinician from North Carolina. The musicians capped the day with a public concert featuring musicians from 35 high schools in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan along with UW-Superior's Symphonic Band. UW-Superior flute instructor Melanie Sever performed a solo at the evening concert as well and was the guest soloist.
UW-Superior's Music Department is well known for preparing students for careers as music teachers and professional performers. The Tri-State Honor Band is part of the department's ongoing effort to offer additional learning and performance opportunities to young musicians throughout the region.
"I'm always impressed with the quality and dedication of the student musicians who take part each year in the Honor Band and Jazz Band," said Dr. Pamela Bowen Bustos, director of bands at UW-Superior. "Honor Band is a good opportunity for them to meet other musicians, develop their skills with our guest clinicians, and to get a taste of a college-level music program."
