Local students awarded in district patriotism contest
District 8 VFW Auxiliary Chairman Barbara Richtsmeier has awarded Cloquet students first through third place in the annual patriotism contests at the district level. Category I, for students in kindergarten through second grade, is a drawing of the Statue of Liberty. Category II, for students in third and fourth grade, is a collage of 9/11. Category III, for fifth- and sixth-graders, is an essay contest with the theme, "My Hero and Why."
Ilei Benson from Churchill Elementary won first place in Category I.
Maddie Young from Washington Elementary won second place in Category I.
Kirsten Pappas from Queen of Peace School won third place in Category II.
Lilly Jung from Churchill Elementary won third place in Category III.
Elise Pickar from Washington Elementary won second place in Category III.
"The Cloquet VFW Post 3979 Auxiliary are proud of these students and thank their teachers' efforts to encourage students to participate in the patriotic contests offered each year," said Velda Beck, Americanism chairman.
