Local golfers make memories at State
When his Barnum girls golf team won the Section 7A championship and qualified for the state meet last month, Coach Cullen Franek quickly said it was the icing on the cake.
“And it still is,” Franek said while at State last week.
Despite their eighth and last place finish, the Bombers had a week to remember, as their small, recently-returned program competed in the Class A state girls golf meet last Tuesday and Wednesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minn.
Barnum, a team in its third year back since resurrected by Franek from the early 1980s, had five golfers compete for a two-day, 36-hole team score of 911. Bomber freshman Jamie Bird, who placed 64th individually, carded a squad-leading 208, followed by Kelsey Timm at 210, Brandi Lekander 235, Geana Guillard 258 and Madeline Nelson’s 265 for two days.
Meanwhile, Moose Lake-Willow River junior Lindsay Loehlein competed two days at the Class AA meet at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, Minn. scoring a 72nd-place 203.
“Even though I didn’t golf my best, it was still a good time,” she said. “I think it would probably make my senior year if I made it back again, but if I don’t, at least I still made it once.”
