Hartmark, Boman win at Pumpkin Run
CLOQUET -- A record field of 326 registered runners and walkers participated in the eighth annual Pumpkin 5K Run and Walk held at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet on Saturday, Oct. 19. The race featured two returning champions and produced nine age-group records on a fast morning for running.
Three-time former Pumpkin Run champion and course record holder Eric Hartmark of Duluth led all runners to the finish in a time of 16:06. Hartmark also won the race in 2009, 2010 and 2011, setting the Pumpkin Run course record of 15:13 in 2009. Two-time Pumpkin Run champion and 2012 winner Sean Gaskell of Duluth was second overall, setting a new 20-29 age-group record of 17:04 in the process. Adam Doe of Fridley was third in 17:37.
In the women's division, Amanda Boman of Duluth placed first overall and also set a new 20-29 age-group record time of 20:56. Ann Kleinschmidt of Duluth was second, setting a new 15-19 age-group record of 22:24, and Jolynn Denman of Esko finished in third place in 23:20.
Additional age group records were established in both men's and women's divisions: Tommy Thompson of Brainerd, 20:09 in the men's 14 and under age group; Gabriel Wicklund of Clitherall, 20:41 in the men's 15-19 age group; James Price of Cloquet, 26:20 in the men's 60-69 age group; and Les Martin of Duluth, 29:22 in the men's 70 and over group; Erin Turner of Cloquet, 25:07 in the women's 14 and under age group; and Sharon Archambault of Moose Lake, 28:48 in the women's 60-69 age group. The Pumpkin Run course is certified by US Track and Field and the results count for points in the annual Minnesota Runner of the Year standings.
"It really was a great morning for running and walking," said Tom Urbanski, FDLTCC director of public information and who also serves as race director. "We were a bit nervous at 6 a.m. when it was raining and then snowing as we started setting up the course and putting out the cones, but the rain stopped, the sun came out, and there was no wind. We saw a lot of smiles and people were having fun on the course and during the post-race awards and prize drawings."
Many of the race participants helped celebrate the theme and season of the Pumpkin Run event by wearing costumes or orange and black clothing. Among those receiving prizes in the costume division were the Duck Dynasty crew, two little jailbirds, Three Blind Mice, Eric Hartmark in a ghoulish Spiderman outfit, and Cookie Monster and Cookie Jar.
Another Pumpkin Run tradition is awarding medals to the fastest FDLTCC students in the race. This year, Marcus Taylor-Loyd won the men's division in 23:26 and Jade Alvillar won the women's division in 25:51.
The race was professionally timed by Gopher State Events using RFID electronic chip timing attached to each participant's race number bib.
Volunteers and race assistance was provided by Boy Scout Troop 168-Cloquet, Cloquet Police Department, Carlton County Transportation Department, FDLTCC Nursing and Law Enforcement program students, and FDLTCC staff and faculty.
