Doris 'Dotty' Lorraine Liimatainen

On Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, Doris "Dotty" Lorraine Liimatainen, 85, of Esko, Minn., with grace, completed her life as beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend and is now in her heavenly home.

She was born in 1928 in Esko, the daughter of Edwin Sr. and Esther Juntunen. Dotty was a 1946 graduate of Esko High School and a 1949 graduate of St. Lukes Nursing School in Duluth, Minn. Dotty and Ronald Liimatainen were united in marriage on July 22, 1950. They resided in their beloved home in Esko for 60 years.

Dotty worked as a registered nurse with Raiter Hospital and Cloquet Memorial Hospital through the 1950s. She then chose to stay home to raise her family. Dotty was an active member of the Esko Apostolic Lutheran Church, led or attended numerous Bible studies, was in the Esko Garden Club, volunteered at the school with immunizations, was an election judge, and took many community classes. She enjoyed birding, gardening, canning, reading and memorizing poetry. Her hospitality and cooking were always outstanding. Her lutefisk dinners and tea parties were highly anticipated events. She was a friend and mother figure to many. Dotty was proud of her Finnish heritage.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin (Helen), Raymond, Willard, Allan, Howard (Inga), Wallace, Wilbur, Thomas and infant brothers, Warren and Leslie; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice (Ray) Mattinen, Verna (Ray) Turunen, Marian Ophus and Barbara (Wayne) Johnson.

Dotty is survived by her loving husband, Ronald; children, Les (Sara) of Esko, Barry of Thief River Falls, Minn., Rhonda (Keith) Myrmel of Arden Hills, Minn., and Charles (friend, Jean Krawiecki) of Esko; grandchildren, Kaia (Chad) Hoiseth, Kristi (Lucas) Downs, Kate (Brett) Asleson, Aaron Liimatainen, and Lisa (Adam) Godfrey; seven great-grandchildren, Paige and Ethan Hoiseth, Norah, Danica and Louisa Downs, and Aubrey and Jude Asleson; sister, Carol (Haakon) Andreasen of Dekalb, Ill.; sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews and friends; and her beloved cat, Oscar.

Thank you to Dr. Kenneth Ripp and his nurse, Julie, St. Lukes in-home hospice services, Home Instead in-home care, friends and family for your heartfelt care and support.

Visitation: Sunday, Aug. 17, from 3 p.m. until the 4 p.m. memorial service celebrating Dottys life in Apostolic Lutheran Church, Esko, followed by dinner in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials are preferred to Apostolic Lutheran Church or to the charity of givers choice.
