Zimny watched as Alex DeRocher earned a place at Wednesday’s state meet at Giants Ridge. DeRocher finished ninth overall after two runs, making the state grade for placing among the top 12.

“Alex had a rough first run,” the veteran coach said. “He had a bobble and lost a lot of time but was able to recover enough to finish in 21st. He regrouped well, and had the third-fastest second run and was able to claw back to a qualifying spot.

“Pretty impressive, really. Most athletes in that position would not be able to pull that off. Alex is a senior. He has worked extremely hard to get to where he is with skiing. He’s the fastest boy I’ve ever gotten to work with.”

Zimney also witnessed Sarah Severson crash hard on her first run. She was not able to finish.

“She was definitely disappointed,” Zimny said of Severson, who was a top-two skier for much of the season. “But it doesn’t detract anything from the great season she had.”
