Mary Beck says it was "like coming home" to take the position of assistant chaplain at Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) in Cloquet. She was born at CMH, raised in Twin Lakes Township, went to school in Carlton and then on to The College of St. Scholastica and the University of Wisconsin Superior, before getting a master's degree in science and environmental science at Hamline University.

For 12 years she taught science in the Mt. Iron-Buhl school system before taking a leave to return home and help her dad care for her terminally ill mother. At that point, she knew she was ready for a change, and always having a strong sense of faith and call to worship, she enrolled in the Clinical/Pastoral Education program at St. Mary's Medical Center. She is also currently working on a master's degree in theology.

In her role as assistant chaplain at CMH, Beck visits with patients prior to surgery, stops in to see patients in the hospital, talks with Sunnyside Health Care Center residents, and leads discussion groups at Sunnyside.

She said she loves the hospital/nursing home mix.

"I let them know someone is here for them to talk to and give them support," she said.

Beck bought her family home, where she lives with her dad and two dogs. She said it is wonderful to be home and that it feels like it was meant to be, as everything falls into place.
