The Cloquet School Board is expected to set a new board-approved levy at its Monday night meeting Dec. 9, which will triple the amount the district currently levies taxpayers for each district student.

Currently, the district levies $97 per student, but the board could raise this figure to as much as $300 per student next Monday night.

The $97 figure is one of the lowest in the state and even the figure of $300 will put the Cloquet district at only about 30 percent of the state average.

New laws passed in the last session of the Minnesota Legislature allow districts to increase their board-approved levy amounts. The $300 figure is the highest amount the board can levy without a public referendum.

The maximum levy, if approved, would raise an additional $1.1 million for the district for each of the next five years, with state tax money adding about $500,000 on top of an anticipated $605,482 from the taxpayers.

The burden on the owner of a $100,000 house in Cloquet is expected to be about $70 per year according to figures released by the district earlier this fall. The board voted 5-0 in September to set the maximum potential levy at $300, but the board must still formally approve the new figure at Monday's meeting.

The new levy, if approved, would raise the school district's portion of the city property tax levy by 16 percent and bring the total levy for schools to $4,325,711.15.

Monday's meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Garfield Board Room. The public is invited to attend.
