What better way to raise money in support of kids than through a family-friendly activity like ice fishing?

The Cloquet Kiwanis Club, assisted by law enforcement students from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, hosted its annual Last Chance Ice Fishing Contest on Fish Lake last Saturday, Feb. 25. As some 250 dads, moms and kids (accompanied by a few family dogs), pitted their luck alongside die-hard fishermen, the local Kiwanis group raised an astounding sum of $14,000.

One of the youngsters wetting a line in contest for the very first time was 8-year-old Avery Liljegren (pictured), who was there with his dad, Randy. And though luck wasn't on Avery's side this year, he said he had a great time trying.

The largest catch of the day was a three-pound northern. Prizes were awarded to the 50 largest fish, and raffle prize drawings were held throughout the event.

The money raised by the Cloquet Area Kiwanis is given back to local charities such as Special Olympics, the Salvation Army, the Carlton County Food Shelf, the Cloquet Fourth of July Celebration and the Cloquet Middle School Halloween Party, just to name a few. The Kiwanis motto is "Serving the Children of Our World."
