Who nominated this student and why: Cynthia Welsh, science teacher

Since September Franny has put in many long hours diligently working on her science research project and paper about zebrafish. Her efforts paid off, as Slater received the elusive Gold Medal at the State Science Fair, the top Grand Award given to the top 5 percent. Slater received the Seagate Emerging Scientist Award, which recognizes excellence in scientific research conducted by students at the fair for the first time and the Broadcom Masters Award given to the top 10 percent of middle school projects. Slater is an academic scholar, plays the piano, and is the student council president, a Web Leader, plays soccer, track and Nordic skiing for Cloquet Schools and does ski jumping with the Cloquet Ski Club. She is in Destination ImagiNation this year for the first time. As you can see, she is an energetic, hardworking individual who is respected and liked by teachers and students alike.

Madelynn is a natural leader who excels in all she does. She catches on to classroom material quickly and then takes that material and goes above and beyond what is expected of her as a sixth-grader. Through her upbeat, spunky, fun personality, she makes her love for learning apparent throughout the school day. Apart from academics, she is a good friend to others and also excels outside of school in athletics.
