Cloquet man arrested in Bemidji
BEMIDJI—A Cloquet man stabbed himself in the chest three times inside a Bemidji residence Tuesday afternoon when law enforcement arrived to serve him with a warrant.
Wendell Lee Olson, 43, was served a Carlton County warrant for third-degree criminal sexual conduct approximately two miles west of Bemidji.
Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp said when sheriff’s office investigators and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents arrived at the house, Olson barricaded himself in a bedroom and stabbed himself with a steak knife.
Officers said they heard the sound of a gun being readied for firing and called for additional back-up officers, according to a release issued from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office. While additional officers were responding to the scene, investigators and agents were able to talk Olson into surrendering.
“We’re glad nobody else in the house was hurt in the incident,” Hodapp said.
Olson was transported to the hospital emergency room at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Law enforcement reported Olson was life-flighted to Sanford Fargo for additional treatment of his self-inflicted wounds.
A second man, Virgil Lee Roy, 46, of Bemidji was arrested for theft charges out of Beltrami and Becker counties. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office stated that Olson was a guest at Roy’s residence on Averi Circle NW.
Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Bemidji Police, Minnesota State Patrol and Bemidji Ambulance Service.
