Cloquet High School Varsity Knowledge Bowl Team 1 (which includes Gabe Berg, Christian Pritchett, Jack Fossen, Josh Dowell and Tim Paczynski) qualified for the Minnesota State Knowledge Bowl Tournament with a second-place finish to represent the Northeast Region of Minnesota in a very close match.

Cloquet ended the competition sandwiched between two Duluth East teams with their second-place finish in the Tier 1 division (the top three teams go on to compete at State).

The Northeast Region has the largest number of teams in the state with 139 teams competing this year, divided into two tiers depending on school population.

Cloquet will be one of the top 48 teams competing out of over 800 teams statewide at the Minnesota State Knowledge Bowl tournament held at Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd April 10-11.

Knowledge Bowl participation requires a team to be well-rounded in their background of topics: questions can be on any topic, school subject, current events, etc. They also need to be quick and anticipate the rest of the question after it begins.

After more than 20 years without a team qualifying for State, Cloquet has qualified a team for each of the past three years. Last year’s qualifying team was unable to attend due to a snowstorm and travel difficulties. Fossen and Dowell were on that team — and they were determined to make it this year.
