The leaves are changing, the air is getting colder, the fear of winter is slowly creeping upon us, but that doesn’t mean it is time to stay indoors!  It is time to lace up your sneakers, strap on your helmet and get a groove to move. The Healthy Northland Statewide Health Improvement Program is teaming up with Cloquet to promote biking and walking in the community.  During the week of October 6th-10th, all of Cloquet will be encouraged to bike or walk to their desired destinations.

The Cloquet Active Transportation Coalition, through Healthy Northland is sponsor a handful of events:

International Walk to School Day: Watch for more details from Cloquet area schools.

Bike or Walk to Work Week: Get a workout by actively transporting to and from work instead of your usual commute.  Not only are you getting yourself healthier, but you are also making the environment healthier.  If you live too far to bike/walk to and from work, take a walk during your lunch break.

Local businesses offering discounts if you Bike or Walk: During this week long event, local businesses are offering discounts to people who bike/walk to their establishment.  Businesses will be identified by signs on the door and through the Facebook page (link at the bottom of this story). Some of the businesses this far include: Zoe’s Boutique (20% of any one regular priced item), Little Bo-Tique (20% off any one regular priced item) , and Carmen’s Dry Dock West ($1.00 off any item).  Participants will need to indicate that they walked or biked to receive the discount.

Bike/Walk Distance signs: Keep a lookout for Bike or Walk signs that indicate how long it takes to get to a certain destination.  They can be found scattered across the Cloquet.

Traffic Skills 101: Bicycle Education Course: Traffic Skills 101 gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic. Participants will leave with a more complete understanding of their rights and responsibilities on the road along with improved bike handling skills and increased  confidence riding in traffic. The course takes place in the classroom, a controlled outdoor space, and on local streets. During Cloquet’s Walk/Bike Week, Traffic Skills 101 will be offered on Saturday, October 11th from 9am-4:30pm at Community Memorial Hospital (Oak Room). A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Registration is limited so please register by October 8th at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/ts101 (see attached flyer)
